To improve the efficiency of the automatic single timing signal system set up at the major intersections in the city, the Director of IIT Kanpur has also asked for a review of the Integrated Traffic Management System. As per the Director, these sensor-based signals should be able to gauge traffic load and change the timings of traffic lights accordingly.
Apart from this, IIT Kanpur will also help in testing and deploying artificial intelligence (AI) systems in the ITMS camera and Automatic Number Plate Recognition System (ANPR). This move is aimed to reduce and avoid accidents, irrational driving behaviour and multiple traffic violations in the city.
Using AI technology will help in catching traffic violators through cameras at the signals. This report can then be sent to ICCC automatically, following which an alert can be raised for the same.

Additionally, IIT Kanpur will also help in improving the condition of smart parking in the city. At present, there are 14 such parking across the city, however, only 2 such sites are currently active. Meanwhile, IIT Director has also asked Tech Mahindra and Smart City team to review the current usage of the free WiFi facility that is available in the city.
The Director has also suggested adding an automatic SMS alert and pre-registration facility for WiFi. Smart City Limited has asked for assistance from IIT Kanpur to turn the Variable Messaging Board even more useful for the public. Moreover, IIT Kanpur will also research and study the current Environment Monitoring Sensor to provide real-time environmental and pollution data.
Reportedly, the institute will deploy a team of experts to develop a mechanism for real-time accurate data collection and transmission system. With such initiatives for the development of the city, Kanpur is expected to soon become a smart city, in the true sense of the word.
