The zoological garden at Kanpur has pull-down shutters indefinitely as samples of Redfowl, who fell dead here on January 6, tested positive for the infection of bird flu. As reported earlier, about 10 dead red junglefowl died at the zoo premises within a span of three days, raising alarms among the authorities and state administration.
Immediate response measures, in tandem with the Centre issued alert over avian influenza, directed the zoo officials to ensure that the remaining birds are culled by Sunday evening. District Magistrate also stated that the Zoo, and areas within 1-kilometre vicinity have been declared as a containment zone and the sale of chicken meat and eggs has been banned in an area of 10 kilometres.

The samples of the dead birds were relayed to the Animal Disease Laboratory in Bhopal under high security and the reports, on Saturday confirmed the presence of H-5 strain in the dead jungle-fowls. Earlier the Kanpur Zoo Director had stated that the zoo has been shut for 15 days, including the hospital enclosure where the infected birds had been placed. However, stringent measures are now being adopted to eliminate the avenue of further spread of the avian flu in other animals at the zoo and the visiting crowd. The zoo has been shut indefinitely and culling of birds was conducted on Sunday evening.
A zoo official, who did not wish to be named, said that culling birds was a painfulness but could not be avoided if the spread of the virus is to be checked.

Meanwhile, Additional District Magistrate said section 144 of CrPC has been imposed to curb the further spread of bird-flu. “We have also issued an advisory to keep a strict watch for unusual sickness or mortality in poultry birds and wild or migratory birds.” the ADM said. The district administration in Kanpur has now started the process of disinfecting all poultry farms and teams have been set up to inspect meat shops.
Chief veterinary officer, state that a constant vigil was being maintained on all poultry farms in the district and also the sale outlets of meat and eggs. Chief Medical Officer (CMO) said that precautions for bird flu are similar to the safety protocols for Covid. “Masks, social distancing and sanitization will also help in check the spread of this virus which is more dangerous than Covid,” he said. GSVM Medical college principal, Dr R B Kamal, said that the hospital staff had been put on alert after confirmation of bird flu in Kanpur.
State prepares against the infection spread

The Uttar Pradesh government has issued instructions in all districts, asking district magistrates to see that poultry products from other affected states do not enter the state. The state has also issued specific directives to not transport poultry and eggs in open vehicles and that poultry markets must be closed once a week. “Instructions to all the district magistrates that poultry products from the infected states should not come within the boundary of Uttar Pradesh, if it is so, stop it immediately and inform the concerned,” the notification issued by the state government said.
The advisory has been issued by the agriculture production commissioner in Uttar Pradesh further reads, “A list should be made on poultry products as well as retail and wholesale markets, where instructions must be issued on cleanliness as per advisory provided by the government of India.” This advisory also directs officials to prepare a list of bird sanctuaries and water bodies visited by birds coming from abroad as well as wild birds. “Necessary biosecurity measures must be made in these places to prevent the spread of the infection,” the advisory said.
This orders also advocates for the constitution of a rapid response team, which must review and send reports daily to the directorate, animal husbandry department. Set-up of control rooms in each district to record unnatural deaths of birds has also been instructed.
