Scientists from DRDO’s Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment (DMSRDE) in Kanpur have developed specialised boots to protect soldiers in landmine-prone areas and Naxal-affected forests. Developed after three years of research, these boots provide protection against both landmine explosions and sharp spikes hidden in the terrain.

Key Features of the Anti-Mine Boots:

  • These boots protect soldiers from landmine explosions weighing up to 125 kg.

  • A landmine explosion generates around 42,000 kg per square centimetre of pressure. These boots mitigate this extreme pressure by up to 160 times, ensuring the soldier’s safety.

  • Weighing 3 kg, the boots are made from a combination of lightweight ceramic porous materials and aramid hybrids, ensuring ease of movement without causing fatigue.

  • The boots have undergone successful testing by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

Key Features of the Anti-Spike Boots:

  • Meanwhile, the anti-spike boots are specifically designed to protect soldiers during patrols in dense forests, safeguarding them from sharp nails buried in the soil and poisonous insects.

  • The sole of the boots is equipped with a shear thickening gel and additional fibre layers, which prevent sharp spikes from piercing through.

  • Weighing only 1 kg, these boots provide effective protection without compromising on mobility.

Manufacturing & future production

Following successful trials, the technology for manufacturing these boots will soon be transferred to defence sector companies. This will enable mass production based on army orders, ensuring wide availability for military personnel.
