With an aim to cut down on illegal encroachment on the roads across Kanpur, street vegetable and fruit vendors will be allotted modern carts and dedicated zones. This will not only deal with the problem of encroachment, but will also address issues arising due to lack of cleanliness and improper street management.
Reportedly, the initiative will be taken forward in multiple phases. In phase 1, vendors from 3 out of 82 mandis will be given modern carts which will be equipped with all the necessary amenities including, wheels, appropriate lighting and more.
Modern vegetable carts, ease for street vendors
Reportedly, at present, three local vegetable markets, namely, Foolbagh mandi, Vijay Nagar mandi and Bamba road mandi have been identified for the first phase. These carts will be equipped with all the modern amenities like wheels to ensure mobility, covered carts and locking facility to ensure safety, dedicated spaces for storing equipment, a dedicated place for branding purposes and dustbins to ensure a clean and healthy environment.
Additionally, over 8,000 vegetable and fruit vendors are registered under Kanpur Nagar Nigam. Mostly, these vendors come under the unorganised small business category. In order to bring such vendors to mainstream, Kanpur Nagar Nigam issued a mandate to register under FSSAI and get a Food License in their name.
