The pavilion was initially constructed in the 16th century, to be used as an army ground to keep a watch around and guard the kingdom. It performed a more romantic role when King Baz Bahadur, the Sultan of Malwa, dedicated it to his consort, Rani Roopmati.
Legends suggest that Rani Roopmati, who was known as a poet and a singer, used to sing while gazing at her beloved’s palace and the pavilion served her well because it was designed acoustically. Their love story took a tragic twist when Rani Roopmati ingested poison to protect herself from being disgraced by the Mughal troops and Adham Khan, in the absence of King Baz Bahadur.

The Rani Roopmati Pavilion has two watchtowers and a sprawling courtyard which makes it a beautiful locale for you to explore! Here, you can also get creative with pictures as the corridors in the basement of the mahal have arched openings that shed out the perfect combination of lights and shadows. Apart from that, the pavilion also offers the most tranquil sunsets that you just can’t miss when here.

The roads from Indore to Mandu are well connected for you to easily drive without exhaustion. Upon reaching Mandu, you will find the Rani Roopmati Pavilion located approx. 5.5 km from the Mandu Bus Stand. The entry timings are marked from 8 AM to 6 PM, on all days of the week. The entry fee is just ₹5, so even if you end up here in a large group, it won’t pinch your pockets!
