5,000 new health & wellness centres to be set up soon in rural areas of UP

This step will move primary health services to local communities, closer to their homes.

In a bid to ease the accessibility of primary health services across rural Uttar Pradesh, the state administration has devised a phased plan to set up 5,000 health and wellness centres (HWCs) across its remote regions. An aid upgrade, these centres will specifically cater clinical facilities and convenience to local communities, closer to their home. This will also augment the overall rural health infrastructure, shouldering the burden off city hospitals.

Through a graded master plan, the healthcare system will be expanded in the state, so that even citizens in the rural/remote areas can get proper help and treatment. This will significantly reduce the number of referral cases piling on bigger hospitals in the states, creating well-equipped medical aid across all strata of the territory.

Furthering this agenda, the 5,000 proposed HWCs will open up comprehensive medical services to the rural populace, read reports. These centres will further ensure proper implementation of health schemes, in their respective zones.

The Health Department will ensure the availability of necessary equipment, doctors and paramedical staff lubricate the robust system. Reportedly, staff nurses trained for 6 months from apex institutions like KGMU will be stationed as Community Health Officers (CHOs), informed a spokesperson of the government.

Services at the HWCs

The sub-centres will offer an expansive range of services to people, including health-related services, including maternal health, child health, immunisation, adolescent health, diabetes, blood pressure check-up, and treatment for communicable and non-communicable diseases. Other activities such as yoga, counselling, exercise will also be made available here.

The HWCs will ensure inclusive medical aid, with emergency medical facilities, immunisation sites, maternal health check-ups and treatment and season flu or disease precaution. If need be, the patients will also be referred to specialist doctors for advanced treatment.
