Mumbai, Lucknow & 11 other cities to get 5G services in 2022
Speeding up the technological transformation, the Fifth Generation or 5G telecom services will be rolled out in metropolitan and big cities in India soon. As per the Department of Telecommunications, Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Lucknow, Gurugram, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Jamnagar, Ahmadabad, Hyderabad, Pune, and Gandhinagar will get 5G in 2022. Notably, the leading telecom service providers like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio have built trial sites in these cities already.

With the testing process now in its final leg, the only deciding factor in the commercial launch of 5G in India is the allocation of the spectrum. Notably, while the DoT had allocated spectrum to Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea and MTNL for 5G trials in May this year, Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and Mavenir are also engaged in the trials currently. As per the department of telecom, "Process of assignment of frequencies to TSPs would be initiated at the earliest possible".

To facilitate the start of 5G services in the country, the administration is participating actively along with the telecom operators and manufacturers of smartphones. In an attempt to develop and test this technology, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has collaborated with eight leading research institutions in India for the research project. The 'Indigenous 5G Testbed project' is being conducted by IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Madras, Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Bangalore, Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering & Research (SAMEER) and Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT).
Funded by the DoT, this test-bed research project was initiated in 2018. In an official statement, the DoT said, "Costing Rs 224 crore, the project is likely to be completed by December 31, 2021, paving the way for end-to-end testing of 5G User Equipment (UEs) and network equipment by 5G stakeholders developing 5G products/services/usecases, including indigenous start-ups, SMEs, Academia and Industry in the country".
"The indigenous 5G testbed, a visionary technology development project initiated in telecom space, will enable development, testing and proliferation of 5G technology system components, cross-sectoral use cases, besides setting up the foundation for the development of "6G Technology landscape" in the country", it added. On December 9 at the India Mobile Congress, the Telecom Secretary K Rajaraman said, "We hope to roll out this 5G testbed in early January which will enable SMEs and other parts of industries to come and test their solution on a working platform," he further informed.

While 4G was a great leap forward in terms of internet speed, the fifth generation or 5g is the latest upgrade in the long-term evolution (LTE) mobile broadband network. This flexible technology is designed to connect various kinds of devices apart from smartphones while providing much higher speed and capacity. Notably, the highest internet speed in 4G has been recorded at 1 Gbps(gigabits/second) whereas, in the high-band spectrum of 5g, the speed goes as high as 20 Gbps.
