In a bid to bring down the pollution levels, especially in the capital city, the UP government is planning to operate 700 electric buses in 14 major cities in the state. According to an official, efforts are being implemented at a rapid pace to execute the project. Previously, electric buses were plying on roads across seven cities in the state, including Lucknow but now the government intends to expand this service to seven more cities. The spokesman further said that more buses will be added to the fleet in the coming weeks and the routes will be upgraded to make buses run faster.

As per a statement by the state CM, the operation of electric buses based on advanced technology will significantly improve the traffic system in 14 major cities of the state. Along with this, the UP authorities have also issued stringent guidelines to the related department, to establish charging stations at all selected locations by April 30, for the operation of e-buses.
After getting the final nod from the state government, the Urban Transport Directorate has initiated work on the project. Ajit Singh, Joint Secretary, Urban Transport Directorate, stated, “The work of providing 700 electric buses in 14 cities of UP will be completed by the end of October and passengers will get the facility of electric buses from the month of November.”
It is also to be noted that the Urban Transport Department has been tasked with the responsibility of manoeuvring pollution-free electric vehicles, under the ‘Smart City’ scheme. Singh further mentioned that Moradabad, Jhansi, Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, Ghaziabad, Gorakhpur and Aligarh, are the cities that will get electric buses for the first time ever. Reportedly, the cities that will the recipient of additional buses are Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Agra, Meerut, Mathura and Ghaziabad.

These e-buses will be highly beneficial in curbing the pollution levels of the state and they will also provide relief from noise pollution, which often plagues the citizens. The electric buses will even facilitate convenient travel with live tracking options and increase the scope of public transportation in the capital city and other districts.
