After Gomti, water level drops below normal in Kathauta Lake of Lucknow

Serving as the lifeblood of significant areas like Indira Nagar, Gomti Nagar & Chinhat, the lake can only sustain the water needs for a mere 7 days.

One of the city's vital water reservoirs, Kathauta Lake of Gomti Nagar now seems to be in grave peril due to the subsiding water level. Reportedly, in the past few days, the water level has now plunged to a mere 11.8 feet from the normal mark of 22 feet.

Serving as the lifeblood of significant areas including Indira Nagar, Gomti Nagar and Chinhat, the Kathauta Jheel sustains the water supply for over 10 lakh residents.

With the rapidly depleting water reserves of the lake can sustain the water needs of these regions for a mere 7 days. Readers are advised to exercise caution in their water usage, making a conscious effort to conserve this precious resource and refrain from any form of wastage.

Water supply was meant to last for 28 days; depleted within 15 days

Adding to the concern, the water level of the Gomti River has experienced a substantial decline, falling below the usual threshold. Both the reservoir and the river rely on the Sharda Canal as their water source.

The interruption in water flow, controlled by the irrigation department, has contributed to the shortage in the water supply. The department halted the water supply for 30 days to conduct essential cleaning and maintenance of the Sharda Canal back on May 19 and asked Jalkal to utilise the stored water to its maximum capacity which was estimated to last for 28 days.

Regrettably, due to the reckless and thoughtless water consumption by the city residents, the water level has rapidly declined within a mere 15 days. Now, the officials from Jalkal have further issued a warning stating that unless the water supply is reinstated to the lake within a week, an unavoidable and severe water crisis will unfold.
