'At the Frontline of Climate Action': All you need to know about World Meteorological Day 2024

March 23 is observed throughout the world with activities, making all aware of the urgency to address & mitigate climate change.

Standing 'At the Frontline of Climate Action' (also this year's theme of the day) is our weather wizards or the Met Organisation!

In order to commemorate the World Meteorological Organisations (WMO) and shine a spotlight on their contributions towards protecting the climate, a joint decision was made in 1950 to celebrate March 23 as the World Meteorological Day.

This year's theme revolves around topical weather, climate or water-related issues. The objective of WMO, at large, is to empower individuals and communities to lead healthier lives by safeguarding them through timely weather forecasts and crucial climate information.

'Climate change is a real and undeniable threat'

"Climate change is a real and undeniable threat to our entire civilisation. The effects are already visible and will be catastrophic unless we act now. The theme of World Meteorological Day 2024 is therefore 'At the Frontline of Climate Action'," writes WMO.

As of now, WMO has 193 members, including India. This number also includes 187 member states and six territories, who maintain their own meteorological amenities. "Its main goal is to facilitate international cooperation in the development of meteorology and the exchange of information and technology related to weather, climate, hydrology and related environmental fields."

Meteorology, the scientific study relating to the atmosphere's processes and patterns, plays a vital role in predicting weather conditions and understanding climate dynamics. It helps humans to plan and prepare for the days ahead, making it an indispensable aspect of one's daily life.

March 23 is observed throughout the world with campaigns and activities, celebrating this beacon of scientific advancement and making all aware of the urgency to address and mitigate climate change.
