Back when ₹50 made us feel rich in school: 7 Lucknow Cafés & Bakeries we grew up on

Tiffin boxes were packed. They were always ignored.

Every Lucknow kid knows there was always that one spot, just outside the school gate, always busy, allways familiar. Before food delivery apps and mall food courts, the city's classic cafés and bakeries were the real after-school destination. Greasy, glorious, and completely unpretentious, these were the places where friendships were cemented and cravings were sorted. Here are seven of them.

1. Exer Club

Exer Club became institutions in their own right, quietly building a legend one packed table at a time. When schools like Loretto and La Martinière let out, these were the first stops, for cold coffee, cheeseburgers, mushroom sandwiches, momos, spring rolls, and afternoons you never quite forgot.

When- 10:30 AM- 11 PM

Where- Mall Avenue

2. Apollo Bakery

Some spots earn a permanent place in a city's memory without ever trying too hard. Apollo Bakery is one of them, no frills, no fuss, just the kind of place you ended up at every single day. St. Francis and Cathedral School students know it by heart, the aloo patty, chicken frankie, chicken burger, and an excuse to linger just a little longer.

3. Cakes & Bakes Shoppee

Cakes & Bakes Shoppee don't need much, just a steady stream of hungry students and a menu that never let anyone down. Effortlessly beloved and always buzzing, it has become the unofficial canteen for St. Dominic and Gurukul Academy in Indira Nagar students who made it a daily ritual, paneer patty, hot dog, paneer chilly burger, chicken grilled sandwich, and no real reason to rush home.

When- 9:30 AM- 10 PM

Where- C 1151, Church Road, Indira Nagar

4. Durham's Bakery and Fast Food

Durham Bakery has that rare quality of feeling like it is always open just for you. A staple long before "after-school hangout" was even a phrase, it runs on loyal footfall and a menu that covered every craving. CMS Station Road students keep the place alive, pizza, frankie, pav bhaji, chowmein, chilly paneer, something for everyone, every single day.

When- 11 AM- 11 PM

Where- Near CMS School, Station Road, Hussainganj

5. Kechup Fast Food

Ketchup Fast Food never needed to shout, the regulars did that for it. Unpretentious, dependable, and always packed, it has quietly become one of those places you just ended up at without thinking twice. CMS Rajendra Nagar and DAV students claim it as their own, veg burger, kebab burger, kebab roll, veg roll, and the comfort of knowing exactly what you were getting.

When- 1:30 PM- 10 PM

Where- Shop 2, DAV Market, Moti Nagar Road, Aishbagh

6. Walnut

Walnut Bakery has the kind of charm that makes it impossible to walk past without stepping in. Warm, inviting, and stocked with everything worth craving, it remains a natural extension of the school day for Christ Church students, patties, pastries, brownies, sandwiches, the kind of spread that makes the walk home a lot easier to delay.

When- 9 AM- 10 PM

Where- 2/3, Park Road, Hazratganj

7. New Lop Stop Center

New Lop Stop Center is the kind of place that has everyone covered, whether you're in the mood for something fried, something spicy, or something you can eat on the go. For students from Aliganj Montessori, CMS Aliganj, and Modern School, it's practically a landmark, samose, chhole bhature, rolls, paani ke batashe, hot dogs, and never a dull moment.
