Originating from the Bay of Bengal, Cyclone Yaas is beginning to show its effects across certain parts of Uttar Pradesh. As per the latest forecast issued by IMD, eastern and north-eastern districts of Uttar Pradesh will receive heavy rainfall accompanied by high-speed winds and thunderstorm, till 28 May. Further, before losing its energy, Cyclone Yaas will move towards western UP and it is predicted that this movement shall worsen weather conditions for eastern UP.
Wind speed shall be between 50-60 kmph
According to the weather department, the influence of Cyclone Yaas will be experienced in the eastern parts of UP in the form of rainfall and gusty winds. Until Tuesday, it was expected that Yass will only mildly affect UP, however, the effects are getting severe as the cyclone is gaining momentum. Consequently, 18 districts of eastern UP are put on alert after warnings from IMD.
The Zonal Meteorological Centre has also issued an alert on Wednesday, as it expects eastern UP to experience thunderstorm, heavy showers and winds. According to the weather bulletin, the speed of the winds shall be between 50-60 kmph. These weather conditions shall continue till 28 May.
Central UP districts, including Kanpur and Lucknow, may also receive scanty or scattered rainfall due to these weather conditions. Further, it is expected that before losing its energy, Cyclone Yaas will move in the north-western direction and affect parts of western UP. This movement will only worsen the situation for eastern UP districts such as Balia and Gonda, among others
Mitigation of damages by district administrations
After the alert was issued by IMD, the state government has advised the administration of eastern UP districts to ensure that the least amount of damages occur. In compliance with these orders, the district administrations are making relevant arrangements and issuing advisories for residents, asking them to stay indoors or to take shelter under strong structures.
