Folks across the country might still think only Tier I cities are growing fast. Meanwhile, Lucknow is quietly stepping into its moment, finally getting the attention it has always deserved. With a long lineup of developments and upgrades rolling out at pace, the city is on the brink of a massive transformation. Over the next 4-5 years, Lucknow could evolve into something almost unrecognisable, in the best way possible. Think a stronger metro network, smoother roads, upgraded public infrastructure and a much more future-ready urban vibe. Here are 5 key developments that are set to shape this next chapter of the city.
Lucknow is soon welcome a new International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre at Defence Expo Ground in Vrindavan Yojana. Recently approved by the state cabinet, the project carries a sanctioned cost of ₹1,435.25 crore. The 32.5-acre facility will feature a convention hall with a seating capacity of around 10,000, along with a separate 2,500-seat auditorium. Moreover, multiple smaller halls will enable the simultaneous hosting of exhibitions and conferences.
The design also incorporates extensive parking and security systems, according to reports. Overall, the project is expected to significantly enhance Lucknow’s capacity to host national and international events.
A ₹305 crore flyover (revised down from ₹337.60 crore) has been approved at Dubagga crossing on Hardoi Road, aiming to ease traffic along the busy Lucknow–Hardoi corridor. The project will deliver a three-lane, 1.8 km-long structure with a width of over 30 metres. The flyover will connect the Kanpur Bypass to IIM Road via Dubagga. At present, commuters often spend around 30 minutes navigating a 500-metre stretch at the intersection due to heavy traffic inflow. Construction is likely to begin after the remaining administrative formalities are completed.
Phase II of the Green Corridor has been inaugurated, strengthening connectivity across Indira Nagar, Gomti Nagar, Hazratganj and the Old City. Planned along the Gomti River, the 28-km Lucknow Green Corridor stretches from IIM Road to Kisan Path, with a total project cost of ₹1,519 crore. Meanwhile, work has begun on the remaining sections, with Phases III and IV set to extend the corridor from Pipraghat, near La Martinière Boys’ College, to Kisan Path at an estimated cost of ₹1,220 crore, of which ₹1,000 crore has already been approved. Phase III will cover around 5.8 km up to Shaheed Path, including a railway overbridge, while the final 6.3-km stretch will complete the route to Kisan Path.
Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport is set for a major ₹10,000 crore expansion, with capacity expected to rise from 8 million to 14 million passengers by 2026–27. Plans include a new terminal, a parallel taxi track to increase flight movement, and a runway extension to accommodate wide-body aircraft, enabling direct long-haul flights.
Meanwhile, Lucknow Metro Phase-1B has been approved at ₹5,801 crore. The 11.1 km corridor from Charbagh to Vasant Kunj will add 12 stations and improve connectivity to areas like Aminabad and Chowk, taking the network to 34 km.
In the same Cabinet Meeting mentioned above, authorities have also approved the redevelopment of Roshan-ud-Daula Building and Chhatar Manzil under an ‘Adaptive Reuse’ framework through a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model. To enable this, the associated land is proposed to be transferred to the tourism department at no cost, with the aim of converting these historic structures into heritage tourism assets. As per reports, the government has clarified that this will remain a one-off decision and not set a precedent.
