Most Windows and macOS users prefer Google Chrome for its user-friendly interface, extensive collection of extensions, and seamless integration with other Google services. However, this widespread adoption has also made Chrome a prime target for cybercriminals seeking to exploit newly discovered vulnerabilities.
The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has recently issued a high-severity security advisory for desktop versions of Google Chrome. CERT-In has further urged users to update their browsers immediately to the latest version to safeguard against these threats.
Outdated Chrome versions at risk
According to the report, multiple security flaws have been identified in Chrome versions prior to 142.0.7444.59 for Linux, 142.0.7444.59/60 for Windows, and 142.0.7444.60 for macOS. These vulnerabilities could potentially allow attackers to compromise systems, steal sensitive data, or cause complete service disruption.
“Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code, bypass security restrictions, perform spoofing attacks, or disclose sensitive information on the targeted system,” CERT-In has noted in its advisory.
However, keeping Chrome up to date ensures that the latest security patches and stability improvements are applied, reducing the risk of exploitation. To update Chrome on desktop, simply click the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner of the Chrome window, go to Help > About Google Chrome, and you’ll find the option to update your browser there.
