In the age of eBooks, the Modern Book Store continues to serve the charm of print literature

Tucked within the legendary Janpath Market, the Modern Book Store has stood strong since the 1950s.

This is a poignant tale about the gradual decline of a once-thriving business, the shifting patterns in demand for print media as an information source, and above all, the challenges posed by online media resources.

One of the most prominent magazines and bookshops of Hazratganj, the Modern Book Store has lost substantial clientele over the years. Tucked inside Janpath Market, Modern Book Store has stood strong since the 1950s. Boasting an exquisite array of newspapers, books, magazines and stationery items, along with a captivating collection of gifts and toys, this two-storey haven irresistibly beckons bibliophiles and stationery hoarders.

A treasure trove of books, magazines & stationery items

Catering to everything from study material aiding students and aspirants in acing competitive exams, to the freshest editions of GQ and Vogue, this is one of the few establishments in the area you to find all your desired books, comics and magazines. Still, despite the massive selection on offer, the owner, Vijay Arora, sadly acknowledges that the store has seen far better days.

The changing trend of online resources like video content, digital stores, eBooks and web-based newspapers and magazines has been a blow to such businesses. Even Modern Book Store, though it endures in the market, has witnessed a significant decline in its customer base over time.

The store had larger appeal before online resources took over

Mr. Arora, an elderly gentleman in his 70s with an air of wisdom, can be spotted seated behind the billing desk of the shop, engrossed in either a newspaper or a book. He reflects, "In the days before online resources took over, our store drew in crowds of customers. It was a bustling hub, especially with students who would come to buy newspapers to check their exam results."

"I have a handful of senior customers who visit to purchase books and magazines, while other customers only come by to the store for stationery and gift items. It's rather disheartening, as the enthusiasm for reading seems to have dwindled," he laments.
