KGMU-Lucknow sets up India's first 'Cough Clinic'; 150 doctors get specialised training

In a novel initiative, King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow has launched India’s first dedicated cough clinic. Established in collaboration with the Association of Physicians of India, the clinic aims to revolutionise how coughs are diagnosed and treated.

As part of a nationwide initiative, 150 doctors from Lucknow and nearby areas have already undergone specialised training on cough categorisation, including recognising different types of cough and identifying triggers.

The training emphasises using a Cough Categorisation Tool, enabling doctors to classify coughs, wet, dry, or multi-symptom, and make symptom-based treatment decisions, reducing the over-prescription of medications. A standout feature of the clinic is training doctors to diagnose coughs simply by listening to their sound.

In addition, the clinic provides essential guidance on the judicious use of cough syrups in adults, addressing safety concerns highlighted by recent controversies.

With rising pollution levels and deteriorating air quality, there has been a surge in respiratory illnesses. The Cough Clinic at KGMU will serve as a dedicated center for assessing cases, distinguishing diseases based on cough characteristics, and ensuring faster, more accurate treatment for patients.

Along with KGMU, the nationwide program aims to establish 10 ‘Cough Centres of Excellence’ across the country and train over 1,000 doctors within a year.
