Lucknow’s prestigious Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has led to another discovery of a novel variety of peppermint (botanically a.k.a. Mentha piperita). A hybrid species of mint and an aromatic perennial herb, this new variety of peppermint ‘CIM-surass’ contains over 70% menthol.
CSIR- Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) has made significant contributions to the mint industry of India and aided in making it one of the leading global producers and exporters of menthol mint oil.
Till date, CSIR-CIMAP has developed as many as 12 varieties of mint that have been adopted by farmers. With significant developments like these, CSIR continues to stay atop amongst eminent institutions of the city.
On the occasion, a room freshener herbal vaporiser called ‘Aero-Clean’ and a booklet, ‘Cultivation, Processing, and Marketing of Suitable Aromatic Crops for North-Eastern Regions of India’, to dispense information on aromatic plants to North-East farmers were also released.
