The much-awaited Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is set to open by June 2025, slashing travel time between the two cities to just 45- 55 minutes from the current two- hour journey. The ₹4,700 crore project, currently 80% complete, will feature an eight-lane highway with elevated sections and cutting-edge technology.

While the expressway aims to revolutionise inter-city travel, traffic experts are particularly concerned about congestion at Gahru crossing, where the expressway intersects with the Outer Ring Road. Vehicle volume on the Ring Road, already at 1,25,000 daily, is expected to increase by 20-30% after the expressway opens.

NHAI’s plan to tackle expressway jams

To ease congestion, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is implementing strategies, including CCTV monitoring and Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems. The project notably employs India's first 3D automatic machine-guided technology, helping accumulate carbon credits through fuel savings. Despite these efforts, road engineering experts fear delays at key junctions could offset the expressway’s time-saving benefits.
