Lucknow recorded its coldest day of this winter season on Wednesday, with the minimum temperature plunging to 6.6°C — 3.6°C below the seasonal average. Dry westerly winds blowing from Shimla's snow-capped mountains triggered this mercury drop, with similar conditions expected to persist until Monday. Meanwhile, UP's Ayodhya registered the state’s lowest minimum temperature on Wednesday at 4.0°C.

Westerly Winds bring cold wave to Uttar Pradesh

According to reports, the western disturbance that induced snowfall in the hills has waned, allowing westerly winds from snow-clad mountains to flow into the plains. This is leading to a temperature decline across Uttar Pradesh. These winds are expected to contribute to the state's cold wave conditions, with minimum temperatures 5°C below normal, in the Terai region and western UP. At the same time, central and eastern regions of the state will witness temperatures 2-3°C lower than usual.
