Lucknow’s Charbagh Railway Station, famed for its royal Awadhi-British architecture, is wheeling towards an infrastructural upgrade. Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) is leading a ₹420 crore redevelopment project to convert this 1926-built landmark into a world-class, heritage-preserving transit hub by 2026. Here’s how the station is being reimagined to blend heritage with modern convenience.

Expanding passenger capacity

The revamped station will cater to over 1.4 lakh passengers daily, featuring two vast concourses:

  • Northern Railway Zone: 120m × 115m concourse

  • North Eastern Railway Zone: 75m × 30m concourse

Both concourses will accommodate up to 10,000 passengers during peak hours and will be seamlessly connected via multiple foot overbridges, including Metro-integrated links with escalators and lifts for accessibility.

New passenger facilities

A new six-storey rear building (45,270 sq. m) will introduce modern amenities including air-conditioned waiting halls, food courts, dormitories, and commercial spaces. Additional blocks on the east and west sides will ease congestion and improve access.

Parking for 900 two-wheelers and 900 four-wheelers, dedicated drop-off zones, and widened approach roads will enhance connectivity. Travellers will benefit from retiring rooms, cloakrooms, medical services, CCTV surveillance, baggage scanners, and smart signage.

Improved platforms & elevated concourse

The Northern Railway section’s 9 platforms will be expanded to 11, all connected through an elevated concourse featuring waiting lounges and retail outlets. A 56-day block is currently in place to develop the concourse over platforms 2 through 6.

Sustainability & modern construction

Green infrastructure will include rainwater harvesting, stormwater management, and landscaped public areas. Pre-engineered buildings and modular construction methods will ensure eco-friendly, efficient development.

Project timeline & challenges

Currently, over 84% of the rear building structure is complete, with platform works and auxiliary facilities underway. However, the rear entry completion has shifted from December 2025 to May 2026 due to Kumbh Mela crowd management, relocation of railway assets, and land constraints.

Once the rear section is operational, railway activities will shift southwards, enabling redevelopment of the station’s northern façade. Existing railway offices, rest houses, and utility structures are being relocated to make way for the new developments.
