Myths, Medicine, and Winter Magic! Do you know what makes the Gular Tree special in Lucknow?
Have you ever strolled through Lucknow parks and noticed clusters of fruits hanging from trees, and wondered if they were edible? If so, you might have come across Gular, known as cluster fig or Umber. This ancient Indian superfruit, abundant in many city parks, is more than what it seems; it's packed with antioxidants and nutrients and has long been valued in Ayurvedic medicine for its healing properties.
Gular also has a super popular cousin called Anjeer (fig), a myth associated with itself and a fascinating story tied to that myth as well! So read on to know more.
Myths, Science, and Cultural Significance of the enchanting Gular Tree
The Gular Tree, scientifically known as Ficus Racemosa, is a common yet intriguing presence across Lucknow, especially noticeable during its fruiting season when ripe figs fall abundantly, often leaving vibrant stains on the roads below.
In Vastu Shastra, it’s advised not to plant Gular trees within homes, as they're believed to bring negative energy. Ironically, this advice clashes with modern science, which recognises the tree’s environmental benefits, notably its capacity to produce ample oxygen.
Adding to its cultural lore, there’s a fascinating folk tale popular in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar: the tree is said to be flowerless, producing fruit directly. Finding a Gular flower is considered rare to the point of myth, with many believing no one has ever seen one.
Scientifically, though, this myth is debunked. Fig "fruits" are actually not fruits at all—they’re structures called syconia, a type of flower that conceals its reproductive parts inside.
Gular Tree: A mesmerising spectacle of nature
In winter, the Gular tree comes alive with ripe, pinkish-hued figs, transforming it into an even more captivating sight. Beloved by squirrels and birds alike, the tree hums with life as animals feast on its bounty. From a distance, the Gular tree can appear like a towering giant wrapped in a crimson fig scarf: a breathtaking vision that infuses the winter landscape with a sense of enchantment.
