National Handmade Day | Celebrating creativity, works of art & beyond, today

More importantly, the day comes as a reminder of all the small business owners around us.

Falling on the first Saturday of April, National Handmade Day is observed to honour the craftsmanship, artistic skill and creativity of people that make handmade articles. It also encourages one to pursue the creative arts and make goods by hand.

Whether you like cooking or baking cakes, creating quirky jewellery, crocheting bags, doing pottery, among other activities, you're a star today (and every day)! Ever read 'handmade with love'? That's what this art of creating one-of-a-kind items is all about!

So, more importantly, the day comes as a reminder of all the small business owners around us. These ventures, that rise from scratch, not only offer fascinating products but also help the environment.

Which brings us to the next peg of discussion. How is making handmade articles an eco-friendly exercise? Free of machine interference and using less energy and resources than mass production, makers of handmade items use their skill and efforts to produce an article.

Thus, National Handmade Day promotes a more sustainable lifestyle. By buying and using handmade products, you can also help make a difference!

Wondering how it all began? National Handmade Day was recognised after, in 2017, Amy Bierstadt founded the website 'From Scratch Farm' that put out creative content on how to make handmade items at home. It was registered in 2017 by Amy and declared as a holiday in 2018 to honour the hardwork and dedication that goes into the making of handmade goods.

Amy describes herself as “Maker extraordinaire. Single mom to a high school senior, a sixth-grader, three hens, a corgi, and a Quaker parrot… Creator of National Handmade Day.”

This year, the theme of National Handmade Day is 'Buy a Handmade Product'. Offering your support and help to local businesses is how you can contribute and make this day all the more significant. The result is three-fold — by purchasing a handmade product, you support the local craftsman, contribute to the economy and support the environment!
