The Central Institute of Sub-tropical Horticulture (CISH) in Lucknow has developed a new variety of black plum- Jamwant. It is considered a special variety of jamun as this fruit has more than 90 percent flesh. Cultivated by the farmers in Kanpur's Bithoor area, Jamwant is being considered a "big breakthrough" and owing to its classification under 'exotic' produce in the European market, it is now being exported to London.

First batch exported in June

The first batch of this new variety of jamun was exported in the first week of June by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). The director of CISH Lucknow has been quoted saying- "It is a big breakthrough and it is the medicinal properties of jamun that has made it so popular. In fact, it is categorized as 'exotic' in the European market."

Jamun is a popular fruit in India and abroad and with the introduction of Jamwant, its export potential has been increased manifold. Though it was initially labeled as a fruit consumed by the financially weaker section of the society, it is now being sold for around ₹300 per kilogram.

Properties of Jamun

It contains high levels of vitamin C, bioactive compounds beneficial for health and also has anti-diabetic properties. While earlier people only consumed the pulp of black plum, now health enthusiasts take its seed as a supplement after drying and grounding it into powder form.
