Aiming to augment the existing medical infrastructure of the institute, the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow will get a dedicated block for kidney transplants next year. Additionally, the institute will also work on expanding the medical staff and enhancing the facilities to reduce the waiting period for kidney patients.
New block to have a capacity of 200 beds and 6 OTs
Presently, the existing kidney transplant facility of the hospital consists of 3 operation theatres and conducts around 2-3 transplants every week. Moreover, the institute specializes in providing expert treatment including complex surgical procedures at an affordable cost which is much less compared to the treatment prices in private hospitals.
This is why, kidney patients from several parts of the country and even from across the border come to SGPGIMS to receive treatment. Considering the steady demand for kidney treatments at the hospital, only a small percentage of kidney patients in the state are able to get timely transplants.
However, within a year, the institute will start a dedicated kidney transplant block with a capacity of 200 beds and 6 OTs.
Medical amenities and staff also to be expanded
Moreover, the institute will also work on the expansion of medical staff and amenities such as postoperative ICU beds, operation theatres etc. With the commencement of the new block, the institute will be able to perform 10-15 transplants per week.
Reportedly, the construction of dedicated renal transplant block has already been completed and it is expected to be inaugurated by January 2023.
