Entrance of Lucknow's Sibtainabad Imambada to be restored as per its Nawabi heritage

According to Mukesh Kumar, Conservation Assistant at the Archaeological Survey of India, the old method will be deployed for this project and it will thus, take a long period of time.

In an attempt to revive the legacy of Lucknow's historic Sibtainabad Imambada, the authorities have initiated umpteen activities for repairing and restoring its main entrance. The frontal parts of the main gate situated in Hazratganj collapsed during the lockdown last year and now, the officials are trying to replicate its glorious heritage from the times of the Nawabs. As per the concerned authorities, it is expected that the work will be completed in about 2 months.

Old method to be used for restoring the structure

The dilapidated structure could not be restored through the past year due to the pandemic-induced lockdown. Given that the curfew has been diffused, the officials have now directed their attention towards it. According to Mukesh Kumar, Conservation Assistant at the Archaeological Survey of India, the old method will be deployed for this project and it will thus, take a long period of time.

Proprietor of SNN Company, Nitin Kohli, the executive organization, informed that the main gate and roof will be plastered with a typical paste and lacquered bricks would be laid. While this intervention will help in strengthening the front boundaries, Mutawwali Mohammad Haider of Imambara feels that amplified measures must be executed to protect the entire building.

Curfew prevented any casualty during the collapse last year

Last year, the enclosure of Amjat Ali Shah Tomb and Sibtainabad Imambada located on Mahatma Gandhi Marg in Hazratganj crumbled down in April. While no causality was reported, a paan shop and two bikes were damaged during the accident. Though the area is highly frequented by locals, it was vacant on the day of the incident due to the curfew.

While this intervention comes at the right time, it is important to ensure that ancient monuments and buildings in the city are regularly checked for their strength and endurance. Necessary preservation and conservation initiatives can only be worked out when the problems are identified in time.
