In the vast and vibrant state of Uttar Pradesh, where railway lines weave through cities, towns, and villages, the safety of millions rests on the shoulders of one of the most vital forces in the region, the Government Railway Police (GRP). At the head of this extensive and operationally critical force is IPS Shri Prakash D., serving as the Additional Director General of Police (Railways).

Uttar Pradesh’s railway network is one of the busiest in the country. Thus, to ensure foolproof security in the region, the GRP operates through 65 police stations and 43 outposts, covering approximately 9,500 kilometers of track and 1,136 railway stations. With a force of about 6,000 personnel, including ministerial staff, the GRP escorts 780 trains on a regular basis.

Inside the powerhouse team behind UP’s railway safety revolution

Under the stewardship of IPS Shri Prakash D., this massive machinery runs with efficiency, preparedness, and compassion. Supporting him is a formidable team: 2 Inspector Generals of Police, 2 Deputy Inspector Generals, 6 Superintendents of Police, 13 Circle Officers, 75 Inspectors, and hundreds of Sub-Inspectors, head constables, constables, and drivers. Together, they form the backbone of a policing force that is both vigilant and responsive.

Core responsibilities and crime prevention

Primary functions of the GRP include maintaining law and order at railway stations and in trains, managing vehicular and pedestrian traffic within station precincts, and preventing and investigating crimes committed against passengers.

Several passenger-focused measures have been implemented:

  • Mahila Help Desks and Police Booths are present at every station with a GRP unit.

  • Public Address systems, supported by the Railways, are used to promote safety awareness.

  • Mobile outposts have been established on select trains for on-the-spot case registration.

  • Special teams are assigned to prevent incidents of jaharkhurani (drugging) and deter dacoity or looting.

  • Emergency police assistance is available through the unified helpline number 112.

Operational focus during Mahakumbh 2025

A major operational highlight occurred during the Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj. Over 400 million pilgrims visited the city, and the railways operated approximately 13,000 trains to manage the flow. The GRP, under the leadership of IPS Shri Prakash D., maintained security and crowd control without reports of serious accidents or public disorder. Site visits and direct supervision were used to manage critical locations and coordinate the force effectively.
