Khaliyar

You must have done certain things simply because you're bored in life or because you had nothing to do! While the rest of the world calls it, 'an empty mind is a devil's workshop', Lucknowites don't have time to be that sophisticated! They will just label you khaliyar ​and move along. The word literally means khali hona - which colloquially becomes khaliyar.

Usage: Tum ekdum hi khaliyar ho kya?

Bano Mat

A city where everybody can be best described as a character out of a sitcom, Lucknow people have a rather simple way to get you off your high horse. One legit cannot act 'extra' in the city if a Lakhnawi doesn't approve of it. There is absolutely no reply to their 'jyada bano mat' so please, don't even try!

Tafree

Toote

This has put a lot of people in a fix and you sure will thank us for telling you this- toote is what Lucknowites say instead of khulle paise or chutte, which basically means change. When somebody asks you for toote, they don't want broken bones or torn notes, they just want smaller currency yaar!

Usage: Yaha 500 ka patta nahi chalta, bhaisahab toote dijiye.

Jaahil

If you say something nonsensical before a Lucknowite, this is what happens - They will look dead into your eyes and say jaahil. This also includes anything silly that you might do before them that annoys or irritates them. It is all for fun but be careful, this is a very intense emotion!

Usage: Jaahilpanti ki bhi hadd hoti hai

Ghazab

Ghazab is that one term that can be best described as the 'potato' of this city's language. It fits in anywhere and everywhere and becomes the star of that statement, just how easily a potato becomes the hero of a dish! The word itself means amazing but then again, it moulds itself to become awesome or unique or whatever, you wish it to be.

Ekdum Wahiyaat
