Thunderstorms grip UP | Orange Alert for 48 hours in 47 districts, including Lucknow and Kanpur
A relentless three-day downpour has brought life to a standstill across Uttar Pradesh, with Lucknow and Kanpur facing particularly severe conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the region, warning of continued thunderstorms and lightning in 47 districts over the next 48 hours.
The devastating rains have claimed 22 lives across UP, with 45 cattle also perishing in the deluge. Officials report that 15 homes have been damaged by lightning strikes alone.
Storms to persist; IMD urges caution
Kanpur division faces an especially troubling forecast, with meteorologists predicting heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds through April 12. The IMD has specifically warned Kanpur residents of thunderstorms today, with rain expected to continue through tomorrow morning.
Similar weather patterns are expected to affect nearby districts such as Kannauj, Farrukhabad, and Etawah, where farmers continue to grapple with severe challenges as their crops remain exposed to the relentless storms. Meanwhile, on the evening of April 11, Delhi-NCR was hit by intense dust storms and heavy rain, disrupting daily life and leading to the diversion of 15 flights from Indira Gandhi International Airport.
While the precipitation may provide temporary relief from rising temperatures, authorities urge residents to remain cautious amid predictions of continued severe weather.
