Trial run of UP's new QR Code-based e-challan payments to begin in Lucknow
The Uttar Pradesh Traffic Directorate, in collaboration with the State Bank of India (SBI), has launched a pilot project enabling vehicle challan (fine) payments through QR codes. The initiative will first be tested in Lucknow and expanded statewide if successful.
The primary aim is to simplify the payment process and increase the recovery rate of e-challans, which has been declining in recent years. The move also promotes digital payments, aligning with broader government goals.
Traffic staff might get card swipe machines
E-challans can currently be paid online. However, if the compounding fee is not paid within three days, the case is forwarded to the court. Authorities are also considering equipping traffic personnel with card swipe machines to facilitate on-the-spot payments. Meetings with various banks are planned to explore this option.
Officials believe QR code payments are popular among the public and can significantly improve compliance. The Directorate expects the new system to streamline fine collection and reduce legal backlog.
