Advancing UP’s scientific prowess, BHU prof selected to represent India at International Ocean Discovery Program!
The prestigious International Ocean Discovery Programme (IODP) Expedition 397 will take place during October-December, 2022
In a proud moment for Uttar Pradesh, a professor from the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has been selected to represent the country on an international Atlantic research expedition. Dr Komal Verma, assistant professor at the Department of Geology, BHU, has been invited to be a part of the prestigious International Ocean Discovery Programme (IODP) Expedition 397 during October-December, 2022. She will be carrying out research along with scientists from 17 other countries, including the US, the UK, Germany, Japan, China etc.
Program to explore marine energy resources
It is a great honour to be selected for the IODP, as it is the most prestigious and premier international organisation in the world directed towards advanced ocean research. The 'JOIDES RESOLUTION', which will carry out the expedition, is technologically the world's most advanced research vessel.
The team will be exploring the potential of marine energy resources. Dr Verma's role as a micropalaeontologist will present her with an unprecedented opportunity for advanced research. With this experience, she will be able to teach ocean science at the University at an international standard.
BHU is making advances in ocean sciences
The Department of Geology, BHU has been making considerable advances in the fields of oceanography and micropaleontology. Their laboratory has become the centre for the study of global oceanic and climate changes and their impact on marine organisms and evolution. Several programmes of the IOD are currently underway at this laboratory.
