UP's new electric double-decker buses to make intercity debut on Lucknow–Gorakhpur route
Uttar Pradesh is all set to roll out its first-ever intercity electric double-decker buses, on the Lucknow–Gorakhpur route. Operated by UPSRTC, this move marks a leap in the state’s push for sustainable and affordable public transport. While Lucknow already has electric double-deckers for local travel, this is the first time such buses will be deployed for long-distance intercity service.
Project begins with 20 buses
In the first phase, 20 buses are being procured, four of which will operate on the Gorakhpur–Lucknow corridor. With a seating capacity of 65 passengers, compared to the standard 52-seat buses, these double-deckers are well-suited for high-demand routes. They can travel 150–200 km on a single charge, covering the entire stretch between Gorakhpur and Lucknow with ease. To ensure smoother operations, charging stations will be established along the route.
Lower costs, lower fares
These electric buses are expected to cut operational costs significantly compared to diesel buses. Passengers will likely benefit from reduced fares, making the service more accessible to regular commuters.
UPSRTC Regional Manager confirmed that the procurement is underway, and the buses are expected to enter service soon.
