World Autism Awareness Day 2019: What is autism and why you should care?

World Autism Awareness Day 2019: What is autism and why you should care?

They say that ignorance is bliss and that may be true. But often, being ignorant has more of an effect than you can possibly imagine. Most people are rather ignorant about disorders and especially, autism, which is a very common problem faced by young children in India. To spread awareness about it, World Autism Day is observed on 2nd April every year and here’s why it matters to you.

Those of us who by God's grace or sheer luck, are born normal and live normal cannot ever fully fathom the suffering of those who are unfortunately born with, or acquire a deficiency or permanent health disorder in life.

There is little awareness amongst the healthy of abnormalities from which a large number of people suffer. The idea of having a day earmarked for such persons, like the World Autism Awareness day, is, you guessed it, to create awareness amongst all and to show solidarity towards the differently abled. This World Autism Awareness Day, here’s what you can do to help them.

It is in keeping with this spirit that World Autism Awareness Day is being observed on April 2. If you’re not aware, autism is a variable developmental disorder that appears by age three and is characterized by impairment of the ability to form normal social relationships, by lack of the ability to communicate with others.

In Lucknow itself, the issue is more widespread than you may think. Rosalin Child Development Center in Lucknow spoke to us on the matter and stated that everyday, they treat about 40-50 new children who suffer from the disorder. They are hard at work to cure the symptoms and rid the kids of the impairments. For this, they make use of special educational programmes that help improve children's behavioural and communication skills.

Apart from that, they also make the kids more exposed to social environments so they can tackle communication patterns and make them more socially comfortable. They also help the children by the use of therapy sessions where they cater to the child’s needs and try to educate them about the importance of becoming socially confident. Through patience and proper care of the kids, they have succeeded many times and are constantly striving to better these kids’ lives.

To spread awareness about the cause, they often set up programmes in schools to educate teachers on how to deal with differently abled students and what they can do to help and support children with autism. Speaking on the success rate, they said that each child needs to be dealt with a different approach as each of them are unique in their own way.

Another organization which deals in helping the children, Creative Mind, has been around for the past couple of years and have gained much acclaim in the field. Their goal however remains rooted and is to enhance the lives of children suffering from Autism. In fact, they even have several programmes where they take in the kids for up to six months and make them able enough to fit in their schools.

Autism, as we know it remains a much taboo part of our society and it is high time that people became aware of the same. Many parents too tend to get rather distressed when they learn that their child suffers from the disorder. However, with the right tools to spread awareness, they can be educated about how the issue can be curbed and embrace their child’s uniqueness. On a larger plane, autism can be dealt with as long as society is accepting of it, and the question remains if you are as well.
