In an effort to contain the spread of Zika virus in Lucknow, the Women and Child Development department is working its way to keep shelter home inmates safe from this vector-borne disease. According to the officials, the administration is undertaking various preventive measures under the ambit of the recently launched initiative. As per the District Probation Officer of Lucknow, the department is planning to initiate fogging drives at shelter homes to eliminate the risk of infection.

Reportedly, this drive will be carried out on the same lines like the ones conducted during the outbreak of the pandemic last year. However, this drive will focus on anti-larvae spraying and keep a tab on vulnerable places prone to mosquito breeding. According to the official data, there are about thirty-one centres in the city at present, including shelter homes, observation homes and shelter homes dedicated to women. Out of these, eight homes are managed by the government while the rest are run by private organisations.
Notably, on a precautionary basis, this drive will cover all the shelter homes across the city, irrespective of its ownership.
This initiative, in the backdrop of the ongoing pandemic, comes as a relief for the inmates who do not have access to state-of-the-art healthcare facilities.
