With a new case of Zika virus detected in Lucknow on Friday, the total tally has now reached 6. Notably, this is the first case that was traced with the help of the health team deployed to counter and control the spread of Zika. Meanwhile, the administration has made special wards for Zika patients in eight government hospitals across Lucknow.

According to the official reports, the 39-year-old patient infected with Zika virus is a resident of the Safdalbagh area of Lucknow. While the initial five cases had tested positive for Zika after coming to the hospital with fever or other symptoms, this case was detected during the ongoing door-to-door survey. Reportedly, the samples of four close family contacts of this patient have also been taken for testing by the authorities.

Additionally, the dedicated health team visited and screened around 842 homes in Safdalbagh, 331 in Phoolbagh, 100 in Sambhalkheda, 2888 houses in LDA colony and around 2256 houses in Azad Nagar. The samples of suspected people have been taken to King George's Medical University (KGMU) for testing.

Meanwhile, with 14 new cases of dengue detected in the city yesterday, the cumulative count of this mosquito-borne disease in Lucknow has reached a total of 1502 patients, this year. As per the experts, both Zika virus and dengue are caused by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. In a bid to control the situation, the authority has been implementing various preventive measures including fogging, anti-larva surveys and surveillance.
