Earlier this month, the BMC reopened the Bandra Fort garden after nearly two years of renovation while the fort repair work is still underway. However, residents and Mumbaikars at large, have raised concerns about alterations to this 400-year-old Grade 1 heritage site. Following a week of discussions with the State Archaeological Department, residents have now addressed the BMC directly.
In a letter signed by 80 individuals, the BMC has been urged to restore the garden to its original state by removing the new concrete work and enhancing greenery. On Tuesday, the locals wrote to the BMC officials, outlining their observations and demands to preserve the garden’s heritage character.

Residents expressed shock at the drastic loss of greenery, noting the replacement of a lush lawn with concrete tiles that amplify the sun’s heat. They also pointed out the removal of the lotus pond and the replacement of a bushy area next to the amphitheatre with a concrete structure.
In response, civic officials stated that no trees were removed during the revamp. They explained that uneven pathways were levelled to improve accessibility for differently-abled visitors, and new palm trees were added to maintain sea views from the amphitheatre. The use of granite and basalt stones may have contributed to the impression of excessive concretisation.
The letter also called for the BMC to consult citizens before undertaking similar projects in the future, suggesting that detailed plans be uploaded to the corporation’s website.
