In a pioneering move to improve passenger comfort, Central Railway (CR) is rolling out row-wise dustbins in air-conditioned coaches of long-distance trains departing from Mumbai. The initiative, which began with the Mumbai CSMT-Amritsar Express (11057), introduces stainless steel, leg-operated bins placed under tray tables next to each row.

Row-wise dustbins in all Mumbai trains by 2025

The trial run has delivered encouraging outcomes, with a noticeable drop in cleanliness complaints on CR's 'Rail Madad' app. Unlike the current setup, where dustbins under washbasins often overflow early in the journey, the new row-wise arrangement ensures efficient waste management throughout the trip. Housekeeping staff now check and empty these bins hourly during the daytime, maintaining cleaner coaches.

At present, most trains feature bins only beneath washbasins, a system prone to early overflow. CR is set to roll out the new initiative to First, Second, and Third AC coaches on more long-distance trains departing from Mumbai to destinations like Gorakhpur, Patna, and Lucknow by the end of 2024. By March 2025, all trains originating from Mumbai's CSMT and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus will be equipped with these upgraded dustbins.

To mitigate theft concerns, CR is working on a secure locking system for the bins. Expansion to Sleeper Coaches is also under consideration, contingent on passenger feedback. This initiative aligns with CR's broader commitment to enhancing passenger experience and ensuring cleaner, more comfortable journeys for all.
