A day in Versova, Mumbai: Where fishing boats, fancy cafés & hidden gems come together
Versova is where the scent of the sea mingles with freshly brewed coffee, and rustic fish markets sit just down the lane from artsy cafés and rooftop bars. One moment you're dodging puddles near the jetty, the next you’re spotting celebs at Yari Road or Four Bungalows, casually strolling past like it’s no big deal.
So if you are planning to spend a Saturday in Versova? Get ready for an adventure because this neighbourhood in Mumbai is packed with amazing experiences that might leave you overwhelmed with choices. Since it’s practically impossible to see everything in just a day, we have put together the itinerary to help you experience the highlights.
Morning: early birds and lazy walks
If you’re up early (well done, you!), kick things off at Versova Beach. Recently revived by one of Mumbai’s largest volunteer clean-ups, it’s now spotless. Perfect for a stroll, some yoga, or a game of beach football with friends.
Next, head to Versova Jetty for a glimpse into Mumbai’s fishing roots. You’ll spot fishing boats coming in with the morning catch and fish auctions in full swing. Fancy a mini escape? Take the short ferry across to Madh Island — visit Aksa Beach, explore the ruins of Madh Fort, and sip fresh coconut water while pretending you are on a tropical holiday.
Too hot already? Retreat indoors and grab a manga at Leaping Windows – part café, part comic book library, part bliss. If you are feeling fancy, explore the boutiques and art shops along Yari Road.
Evening: Versova comes alive
Take a breezy walk on the Versova Beach Promenade or the Rock Beach stretch. Grab a kulfi from a local vendor, or just sit back and watch the sky turn orange.
Want something more cultural? Head to Versova Village — cobblestone lanes, Koli houses, and a history lesson without the museum labels. If you are lucky, you’ll catch live folk music or a seafood festival pop-up.
Also, keep your eyes peeled, you might just catch a glimpse of locals celebrities like Sushmita Sen, Tabu, or Arshad Warsi going about their day in Versova!
Not ready to call it a day just yet?
If you have ticked off the beach strolls and coffee stops but still fancy a wander — Versova’s got plenty more up its sleeve. Here are a few spots to keep the vibes going.
Nana Nani Park: Tucked away near the beach, this gem is ideal for a relaxed sit-down or a quick jog.
Seven Bungalows Garden: A riot of tropical plants and flowers, often hosting local music gigs — especially on weekends.
Janardan R Patil Park: Neat, peaceful and perfect for joggers or families with kids. There’s even a badminton court.
Swami Samarth Temple: A quiet, beautifully kept temple with a lush garden. Visit on any day except Thursday (unless you like crowds).
Versova Fish Market: Smelly but iconic. Go early for the freshest seafood and to watch the chaos of local life.
Where to eat (and eat, and eat)
If your feet are tired but your heart is hungry, Versova has some great restaurants. From street-side momos to seafood and pizzas piled with cheese, here are some of the best places to graze and let the night unfold.
Versova Social – For drinks, dancing and more.
Joey’s Pizza – Don’t skip the cheese garlic bread.
Tanjore Tiffin Room – South Indian food, but classy.
Taste of Darjeeling – One of the best momos in the city, served street-side.
Banana Leaf – Veggie heaven with southern spice. Great for group meals.
Malwani Kkalwan & Keshav Koliwada – For fresh, fiery seafood – order whatever they recommend.
Before you go… a few essentials
The Versova Metro Station on Line 1 (Versova–Ghatkopar) is your best bet. Hop off and you are just a rickshaw ride away from the beach. If you are coming from the western suburbs, Andheri station is the nearest railway hub, followed by a short ride via auto or cab.
From beaches and parks to temples and seafood feasts — you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better blend of calm and cool than Versova in Mumbai. Just don’t forget your sunglasses, and maybe a hat too.
