Easily accessible by car or train, here are 6 selected hill stations near Mumbai that offer a convenient respite for weary urban dwellers.

Chikhaldara

Nestled within the Amravati district, Chikhaldara finds its place perched at an elevation of 1,088 meters above sea level. The tranquil hill station is home to Melghat Project Tiger and shelters rare wildlife species including barking deer, chousingha, and sambar.

Chikhaldara offers several must-visit attractions such as Amner Fort at a height of 100 feet, Bhim Kund-a 3,500 ft. deep reservoir, and Bir Lake, dating back to 1890. Notably, it is also the sole coffee-producing region in Maharashtra. So when are you coming over for unforgettable nature-filled adventures, brimming with awe-inspiring sights and unforgettable coffee.

Lavasa

Lavasa, once celebrated as a hilltop haven inspired by Italy’s Portofino, is a charming escape from Mumbai. It is also India’s first privately developed metropolis, which often drew urban escapists leading to numerous eateries and coffee houses along the promenade overlooking the city’s central lake.

The city also houses a range of activities, from water to adventure sports. Additionally, Lavasa’s annual International Cultural Festival, featuring a rich tapestry of art and music, offers an ultimate experience.

Panhala

For those who are not aware, Panhala, situated on the Sahyadri mountain range, is known for its scenic beauty, historic forts, and ancient temples. It is a popular tourist destination, especially during the monsoon season, when the surrounding hills and valleys are covered with lush greenery.

A visit to the Panhala Fort, which is one of the most significant historical landmarks in Maharashtra, will take you back in time. The fort’s impressive architecture and panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys draw many visitors to the site.

Tapola

Treat yourself to an ideal weekend escape at Tapola, nestled in Mahabaleshwar. Often referred to as ‘Mini Kashmir,’ Tapola charms visitors with its scenic beauty and tranquil atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Here you can visit the surreal Tapola Lake at sunset, explore ancient monuments like Jaygad and Vasota, survey strawberry fields, camp close to nature for some privacy, and interact with locals for exclusive insights. Jawhar

Jawahar is often missed by tourists, mostly because it is small and quaint but that is what makes it so special. Nestled in the Sahyadri mountain range, Jawhar has earned the moniker ‘Mahabaleshwar of Thane’. Its delightful climate and scenic vistas draw parallels to Maharashtra’s famed hill stations. Beyond its natural beauty, Jawhar is steeped in rich cultural heritage, tracing back to the 14th century. Founded in 1306, it served as a crucial encampment for Maratha king Shivaji, during long travel.

Best places to visit in Jawhar includes Hanuman point, Dabdaba Falls, Jai Vilas Palace, Shirpamal and Bhopatgad Ford constructed by Chhattrapati Shivaji.

Distance from Mumbai: 251.6 km

Best time to visit: November to February

Suryamal

Another less explored hill station near Mumbai is Suryamal, located at an altitude of 1800 ft above sea level, in Mokhada, Thane. Untouched by modernisation, Suryamal is the highest peak of the region, offering you a breathtaking view of the lush green mountains and valleys.

Most of the visitors to this hill station are predominantly trekkers, who are on the lookout for unexplored hills to conquer. If not in mood for trekking,
at a short distance from here is the Amala Wildlife Sanctuary, home to rare varieties flora and fauna. Another place which you can visit is Deoband temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, constructed on the banks of a river.
