After Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) unveiled its Climate Budget Report, earmarking ₹10,000 crore for eco-initiatives, an alliance of environmental organisations has come together called Mumbai Clean Air Action Hub. This coalition held its first meeting on June 1 to strategise as per Mumbai Clean Air Action Plan (MCAAP).
Attendees expressed diverse expectations ranging from exploring collaborative opportunities to establishing a pressure group similar to Bengaluru’s Round Table for solid waste management. The environmental groups include Asar, Watavaran, Awaaz Foundation, Conservation Action Trust, a member from IIT Bombay, Walking Project, Green Communities Foundation, Govandi Citizens’ Group and others.
Embracing a hyperlocal strategy, the group pinpointed areas like Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Dadar, and Chembur for focused attention. Each member has pledged to champion a specific aspect of the work, whether it’s raising awareness, conducting policy research, advocating for change, or collaborating with the government on technical solutions.
With plans to spread the word on air quality through awareness sessions in schools, colleges, and residential associations, the group plans to tap into existing citizen groups for broader outreach.
