Bidding Adieu: Santacruz's 300-YO Baobab Tree axed as Metro 2B project advances

The end of an era.

Located in Santacruz on SV Road, a stalwart sentinel, the area's popular 40-foot-high baobab tree bid its silent farewell after an illustrious reign spanning three centuries. Reverently dubbed Santacruz's venerable patriarch, this arboreal marvel bore witness to epochs of history, from colonial conquests to the bustling dynamism of contemporary life.

Now, as the Mumbai Metro 2B project heralds progress, the axed baobab tree marks the end of an era.

A tribute to resilience and community spirit

Residents gathered here, reminisced about the tree's unwavering presence, recalling instances of solidarity in its defence -- from rallies in 1979 to recent endeavours to shield it from encroaching development. The residents also reflected on the battles waged, to preserve its existence, each protest and petition a testament to their deep affection.

Amidst the advancement of the Mumbai Metro 2B project from DN Nagar to Mandale, the baobab exits amidst the numerous protests. While its physical form may fade, its legacy remains imprinted in memories. Every rustle of its leaves ensures the baobab's enduring presence.
