BMC plans new seafood plaza in Khar Danda Koliwada; public feedback invited till Dec 16
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to launch its third seafood plaza at Khar Danda Koliwada, Khar West, aiming to empower local fisherwomen and promote traditional Koli cuisine. Priority for operating the stalls will be given to women from the local Women Self-Help Groups (WSHG).
The upcom plaza, located behind Sherely Village Bus Stop on Carter Road, will feature mobile eateries operating on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
From Mahim lessons to Khar Danda plans
After facing internal conflicts at Mahim Koliwada Seafood Plaza, the BMC is taking a more cautious approach with its new seafood plaza in Khar Danda. To ensure smooth implementation, they have invited suggestions and objections from local residents, with a deadline of December 16 for feedback submission.
This new seafood plaza, part of the BMC’s initiative to promote local food and tourism through "food on wheels", will feature stalls offering traditional Koli cuisine. Following the success of Mahim and Worli Koliwadas, the Khar Danda plaza aims to prioritise women from the local fishermen community.
The seafood plaza at Mahim, inaugurated in November 2023, along with others in Worli, encountered operational setbacks following the fishing hiatus from June to September. Political conflicts further delayed the reopening of stalls. The G North ward office has now instructed the Women Self Help Groups to resume their work.
This new initiative aims to resolve past issues and create a sustainable platform for fisherwomen to showcase their culinary traditions. The BMC hopes this proactive approach will prevent past challenges and ensure the plaza’s success.
