The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is launching an initiative to provide free, air-conditioned study rooms for underprivileged children in Mumbai’s slum areas.
Building on the success of its free library program, the BMC plans to set up the first study room in Ganesh Murti Nagar, Colaba, using two shipping containers. Each container will accommodate 15 students, complete with tables and chairs. The project, estimated at ₹50 lakh, is expected to be operational within a month, with tenders already issued for air-conditioning and other amenities.
Mumbai Guardian Minister emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating it will help ensure that financial constraints do not hinder students’ education. Additionally, BMC is also preparing to build its first ‘Signal School’ beneath Santacruz-Chembur Link Road Flyover, featuring 10 containers and it is expected to serve 60 to 100 students.
