In a bid to reduce the burden on the suburban train system and roadways, the Maharashtra Government has decided to flag off ferry commute between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, soon. Besides decongesting city road, this mode of travel has been commissioned as an effective means to control the crowd in local trains. The Mumbai Port Trust Chief has informed that the majority of work in this regard has already been completed and the fine-tuning will also be checked shortly.
Mumbai & Navi Mumbai to soon be only an hour apart!
As per plans, the ferry will originate from Princess Dock in Mumbai and terminate at Belapur, mapping Vashi, Nerul, Airoli and Thane’s Meeth Bunder as major stops. Serving as an alternative means to the local train network, the waterways will help cover the journey in 1 hour, saving daily travellers’ commute time. Offering ease of commute to the travellers, the ferry transport will materialise as a major mode of transport between Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane in the coming years.
The Mumbai Port Trust Chief also stated that RoRo and RoPax services will also be introduced here in the future to further establish this route as a prominent circuit. While RoRo services will be dedicated to transporting small vehicles such as ships and trucks to heavy equipment, the RoPax utility will help to shuttle both, people and vehicles on the same trip.
The prime focus of this plan is to develop a means of travel that is safe for the general public. With people relying heavily on the local trains for travel, overcrowding and consequent accidents have become a frequent sight in Mumbai and neighbouring towns, in the last few years.
