The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai has yet again set a record of bringing in path-breaking innovations, this time with the introduction of an ‘Integrated Security CheckPoint’ at Terminal 2 (T2).
In a first such initiative, all international and domestic passengers departing through T2 will undergo common security clearance. The new robust and high throughput security system in place will ease the flow of passengers, without any confusion.
One set of e-gates for all passengers
Earlier, security checks of both domestic and international passengers at Terminal 2 were carried out at Level 3 and Level 4, respectively. However, the integration will see both domestic and international passengers moving through any one set of e-gates installed at 5 different locations at the pre-security check area. The passengers will be then separated via validation at another set of e-gates positioned post-security check.
The Integrated security checkpoint is a testament to CSMIA’s future-ready approach to better the airport operations and setting a precedent within the Indian aviation space. The new system will help the airport in redefining its operational efficiency, which can then be replicated across all major Indian airports for smoother passenger flow and movements.
New ATRS system to boost security checks by two folds
The base prototype model deployed at Mumbai airport presently includes 13 Automatic Tray Retrieval systems (ATRS) for rapid throughput. These roller and sensor-based machines are programmed to return luggage trays to the starting point after passengers collect their belongings, without any manual intervention by passengers or staff. The latest upgrade not only increases the security efficiency but also puts an end to passengers’ hassle of waiting and looking around for trays with its continuous circulation technology.
In terms of numbers, the new technology will help to increase the rate of security clearance by over two-folds, at an average of 280 passengers every hour. The conventional system can only check 130 passengers in the same duration. Authorities have also planned to deploy ATRS at Terminal 1 for the convenience of passengers.
Due to faster throughput, the passenger will now experience a more relaxed transit through T2 and will be able to enjoy more time inside the Security Hold Area (SHA) before they finally board the aircraft.
