On April 1, the Maharashtra Cabinet approved a proposal to allow electric bike taxi services in cities with a population of over one lakh. The initiative aims to improve last-mile connectivity and provide an affordable and eco-friendly transport option for urban commuters.

As per reports, the scheme will generate 20,000 jobs, with 10,000 in Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Special e-bikes with protective partitions and monsoon covers will be introduced. Additional safety regulations for women passengers are also being developed.

What the new policy includes:

  • Only electric bikes registered under the transport category will be permitted.

  • Services will cater to passengers travelling up to 15 km within urban areas.

  • Drivers must be aged between 20 and 50 years to provide the service. Women passengers can opt for female riders.

  • A ₹10,000 subsidy is being considered for rickshaw and taxi drivers who switch to e-bike taxis.

  • Children of auto and taxi drivers affiliated with government-certified boards can apply for financial aid to purchase e-bikes.

  • Private two-wheelers will be allowed for bike-pooling, reducing traffic congestion.

  • Vehicles must have a fitness certificate, legal licence, and insurance cover.

  • Fare regulation will be managed by the Regional Transport Authority.

  • Yellow-painted e-bikes for easy identification.

  • GPS tracking, emergency communication, speed monitoring, and insurance for drivers and passengers.

  • Strict background checks for all riders.

  • A revenue model for the same is currently being finalised.

This move aligns with Maharashtra’s pollution-free transport goals, paving the way for sustainable urban mobility.
