Feeling overwhelmed? Mumbai has a new way to let it all out, no judgment, no questions asked. Welcome to The Cry Club in Khar, the city’s first organised “crying club”, where you’re encouraged to do exactly what the name suggests, cry your heart out.

Mumbai joins India’s cry club trend

The idea isn’t as bizarre as it sounds. Crying clubs, inspired by Japan’s wellness trend Ruikatsu (literally “tear-seeking”), are popping up across India’s metros. Delhi, Bengaluru, and even Surat (which has had a “Healthy Crying Club” since 2017) already host their versions. Now, Mumbai joins the movement with tissues, tea, and soft music included.

So what really happens inside? Picture a dimly lit room with gentle background tunes, warm cups of chai, and a bunch of strangers who aren’t there to fix you, just to listen, nod, and maybe offer a hug. Whether you’re nursing heartbreak, burnout, or just the weight of a bad week, you can rant, sob, or sit in silence. The promise is you’ll leave feeling lighter.

And yes, science is on the side of tears. Studies show crying can reduce stress hormones, trigger mood-boosting endorphins, and even build connection when shared in safe spaces. In short, it’s therapy without the stigma.

Step in, cry out

In a city that thrives on hustle, the cry club offers pause, a gentle rebellion against bottling it all up. Because sometimes the bravest, healthiest thing you can do is let the tears flow. Burnout, heartbreak, or just a rough week, whatever you’re carrying, this space says, leave the mask at the door, and bring your tears.
