But what exactly is a listening room? The idea dates back to Japan’s post-war jazz cafés, where people came to hear music on high-quality audio systems. This is vinyl-listening café combines speciality coffee with a tattoo studio and regularly hosts dedicated vinyl sessions. Recent sessions have centred on albums such as Frank Ocean’s Blonde, Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours and Tyler, The Creator’s IGOR. The sessions are generally free, with guests paying for their coffee and food.

Idoru is one of the most obvious fit if you are looking for a listening-bar in Mumbai. It has a custom-built sound system, a vinyl archive of roughly 200 LPs, and two turntables. Its own description is careful to say it is not a formal Japanese listening room, but music and sound are central to the bar’s identity.

Opened in April 2026, RumBabaa is an all-day coffee and vinyl-led café built around speciality coffee, food, desserts and music. A vinyl set-up sits at the centre of the space, with records playing throughout the day. Inspired by Japanese minimalism, its interiors use natural materials, soft lighting and understated details.
