After eight years of planning and meticulous restoration, France’s iconic Galeries Lafayette is set to open India’s first true luxury department store in Mumbai’s historic Kala Ghoda district in early November. The 130-year-old retailer has chosen India as its tenth international location, partnering with Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail.
Debuting with 250+ brands
Spanning 90,000 square feet across two restored neoclassical buildings, Turner Morrison and Voltas House, the five-story flagship will house over 250 brands, with 70% making their Indian debut. Shoppers can expect labels like Patou, Coperni, Marni, and Comme des Garçons, alongside luxury beauty from Hermès Beauté, Byredo, and La Prairie.
This store opening aligns with India’s booming luxury market, set to reach $90 billion by 2030, driven by 871,000 dollar-millionaire households and a young, globally-savvy consumer base.
The store’s design by London’s Virgile + Partners blends Parisian elegance with Mumbai heritage, featuring the brand’s signature cupola and intricate Indian craftsmanship. While Western department stores struggle, emerging markets like India offer retailers a glimpse of the consumption boom ahead.
