Born into a humble family in Pune, Date's early life was marked by struggle and loss.

Dr Sadanand Vasant Date, currently at the helm of Maharashtra's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), has been appointed as the Chief of National Investigation Agency (NIA). Date's journey, from a modest start as a newspaper delivery boy to the pinnacle of the NIA, highlights his steadfast dedication and remarkable bravery.

Hailing from the 1990 batch of Maharashtra cadre IPS officers, Date's appointment by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) spans until December 31, 2026, as per a decree issued on March 26.

The inspiring journey of Dr. Sadanand Vasant Date

Born into a humble family in Pune, Date's early life was marked by struggle and loss. With his father's demise at a young age, Date took up the mantle of responsibility, working as a newspaper delivery boy to support his education. Despite facing adversity, his thirst for knowledge drove him to pursue higher studies, eventually leading him to crack the UPSC exams and join the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1990.

Date's tenure in law enforcement has been nothing short of extraordinary. His bravery during the infamous 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai earned him accolades and recognition. Leading from the front, he fearlessly confronted terrorists, ensuring the safe rescue of hostages at the Cama and Albless Hospital for Women and Children.

Throughout his career, Date's commitment to justice and public service has remained unwavering. From his role in combating organised crime during his Humphrey Fellowship at the University of Minnesota to his leadership in various policing positions, including heading the elite Force One and the Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar Commissionerate (MBVV), Date has consistently demonstrated his resolve to uphold law and order. Date was awarded the President’s Medal (2007) and the President’s Police Medal (2008) for his meritorious and gallantry services to the country.
