Mumbai has plenty on its plate this week, from major changes at the airport to fresh plans for the city’s Metro network. Here are 7 Mumbai updates worth knowing right now.
Mumbai Police has banned bursting of firecrackers, fireworks and rockets on public streets, along with the use of laser lights and high-intensity light beams across the Brihanmumbai Police Commissionerate. The restrictions came into effect from October 6 and will remain in place until December 4, unless withdrawn earlier. The order follows directions from the Bombay High Court aimed at curbing air and noise pollution. Violators may face legal action under applicable law
Mumbai’s Metro stations could soon become destinations in their own right. Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL) is looking to turn unused spaces across its stations into commercial hubs, with a new leasing tender expected to generate at least ₹5 crore a year. The plans include fast-food outlets, pod hotels, fashion stores, offices and other businesses.
Mumbai is gearing up for a major expansion of its Metro network, with the state government declaring 2027 as “Metro Year”. The city is targeting the completion of at least 70 km of new Metro corridors next year, alongside a May 31, 2027 deadline for the Sewri-Worli elevated connector. If the timelines hold, Mumbai could see a significant addition to its public transport network.
Mumbai is currently under a 10% water cut, but BMC has proposed spending ₹8.25 crore to wash 377 roads covering 677 km. The civic body says the roads will be cleaned using recycled water. The proposal comes as the city continues to manage its water supply, making the road-washing plan an unusual addition to Mumbai’s civic agenda.
Mumbai’s Terminal 1 is set to stop handling flights from October 25, 2026, as the nearly 80-year-old domestic terminal prepares for a major rebuild. It is expected to remain closed until 2029-30, with demolition scheduled to begin in January 2027. The closure has been made possible by the opening of Navi Mumbai International Airport, but passengers will see changes much sooner, with airlines reshuffling flights between Mumbai’s two airports and Terminal 2.
Indian Racing Festival (IRF) 2026 has announced its remaining calendar, with the season heading to two major venues. Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida will host Rounds 4 and 5 on October 31-November 1 and November 28-29. Further, the season will wrap up with a night race at the Navi Mumbai Street Circuit on December 5-6, with the 3.69-km track set near Palm Beach Road.
Digging up Mumbai’s roads without permission could cost agencies more. BMC has proposed a fivefold increase in penalties for unauthorised road excavation, as the civic body looks to curb unapproved digging linked to infrastructure work. The move will bring stricter consequences for agencies that dig up roads without the required permissions.
